The SLY 50 Proposal was developed for the 1st edition of the NEXT SLY CONTEST, organised in 2008. Our proposal has impressed by her styling and innovations, and has been amongst the very few finalists on the contest.
We developed this proposal with the aim of emphasising on her familiarity with the existing SLY range, boasting sharp and stylish lines, and on the production feasibility, taking over the big challenge of coming up with environmentally friendly and innovative solutions that could be manufactured under reasonable time and price conditions.
The yacht is equipped with the patented DSS system developed by Hugh Welbourn and the DSS Company. This device consists of a horizontal foil, which slides from on side of the boat within the hull, is extended on the leeward side when the yacht is sailing providing upward lift and therefore added stability. The use of the DSS can allow for lighter ballast and/or a reduced draft, as well as boosting the performances at almost every point of sail. In terms of cruising, the DSS brings enhanced comfort, due to the reduced heel angle and dampened boat motions (roll, pitch…). Within the scope of this project, the DSS enables to lighten the displacement and increase the sailing abilities, providing a longer range and reducing the use of the engine in the light airs.
Further technical innovation can be found in the structure, partially made of flax fibre pre-impregnated reinforcement, as well as in the propulsion unit consisting of a diesel electric hybrid engine enabling lower emissions and even zero consumption at low speeds.
The layout also breaks from the standards with the companion way offset to port, leaving the outside saloon free of all crew displacements. All the control lines and manoeuvres run back to the steering positions, while the last meters of the cockpit are a genuine terrace overlooking the sea. Inside, the layout also brings some fresh air and offers three guest cabins with two heads and a skipper cabin.

L’avant projet SLY 50 a été développé pour la 1ere édition du NEXT SLY CONTEST organisé en 2008. Notre avant-projet a impressionné par son élégance et par ses innovations, et a figuré parmi les tous derniers finalistes du concours.
Nous avons développé notre projet en mettant l’accent sur la familiarité des lignes et du style par rapport à la gamme existante de SLY Yachts, ainsi que sur les possibilités de mise en production. Le challenge de concevoir un bateau écologique et innovant qui puisse passer en production avec des délais et un budget raisonnables était donc relevé.
Le bateau est équipé du système breveté DSS, développé par Hugh Welbourne et la société DSS. Cet appendice est consisté d’un foil, qui coulisse d’un côté à l’autre du bateau dans les fonds de la coque, est déployé sous le vent de manière à produire une portance verticale et augmenter ainsi la stabilité du bateau. L’utilisation du DSS permet de réduire le lest et/ou le tirant d’eau, ainsi que de booster les performances à quasiment toutes les allures. Pour des applications de croisière, le DSS apporte un confort accrue, grâce à une réduction de la gîte et aux mouvements parasites atténués (roulis, tangage…) Dans le cadre de cet avant projet, le DSS a permis de réduire le déplacement du bateau et d’améliorer les performances à la voile, permettant ainsi d’augmenter l’autonomie du bateau ainsi que de réduire les périodes passées au moteur.
D’autre innovations techniques peuvent être trouvées dans la structure qui à recours à des tissus pré imprégnés en fibre de lin, ainsi que dans la motorisation qui est constituée d’une unité hybride diesel électrique permettant de réduire les émissions, parfois jusqu’à zéro pour des vitesses réduites.
La disposition extérieure se libère également des standards, avec une descente décalée sur bâbord laissant le carré extérieur libre de tout mouvement de l’équipage. Toutes les manœuvres courent sous le pont jusqu’aux postes de barre, alors que les derniers mètres de cockpit constituent une véritable terrasse sur la mer. A l’intérieur amène également une bouffée d’air frais avec un agencement intéressant réunissant trois cabines invités, deux salles de bain et une cabine skipper.
